Sr Director of Software Engineering

BREAKFAST is a world-renowned art studio with a reputation for conceiving and producing some of the most high-tech, connected artworks in the world. BREAKFAST’s pieces can be found in various museums, lobbies, stadiums, private collections, and public spaces all around the globe. 

Join a small, highly skilled cross functional team of designers and engineers to develop some of the largest mechatronic art installations in the world. 


The Role

BREAKFAST is looking for a highly skilled engineer with a broad background in software engineering, ranging all the way from cloud, saas to embedded firmware and creative coding. Strong management and leadership skills are required, you will be directing the teams effort, plan projects and develop the skills of your team members. Currently the software team is very small, so in this role you are expected to split your time between management of software projects and being an individual contributor to projects when needed. 

The right candidate for this role has a strong passion for hardware/software projects, robotics, kinetics and a deep understanding and drive to learn how things work. In this role you will be reporting to the founders and you are working intimitly with cross functional team members.

Software projects at BREAKFAST range all the way from low level c/c++ firmware development for motion and LED control and developing custom comms protocols all the way up to web/cloud deployments and IOT type project. Internal tooling for hardware engineers and production line automation.


  • Initiate new project plans and manage the project timelines and milestones
  • Manage the software team and day to day software meetings
  • Ensure high quality of design and team skills
  • Conduct performance reviews with team members
  • Be a contributor to the code base and other software related projects
  • Responsible for budgets in software related projects
  • Manage external vendors and freelancers
  • Find and hire exceptional talent when needed

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in CS or similar related field
  • 10+ years of professional experience in creating digital products
  • Experience managing software engineers and projects
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Deep understanding of linux based systems, cloud computing and low level firmware development
  • Experience working with sensors, actuators, LEDs, stepper motors
