The Role

BREAKFAST is looking for a highly skilled Industrial Designer that has experience working in small cross-functional teams and wearing a lot of different hats. In this role you'll be responsible for the final look, feel and design of our art sculptures and mechanics. You'll have to be equally adapt at new concept sketching as working with our ME's in Solidworks on the final mechanical parts for production. We see this as a hybrid role and best suits a candidate that has great ID skills but can bridge over to mechanical engineering tasks as well.

The role is to translate the founders vision and ideas into fully fledged art sculptures along with our great design team consisting of ME's, EE's and software engineers. The right candidate is extremely focused on quality and design, and have an eye for aesthetics. You'll be following your projects from start to finish and ensuring quality in the final piece into production and installation. 

Our pieces are usually very large scale public works that include interactive components in architectural spaces. Experience in these types of environments is a huge plus. 

Responsibilities

  • New project concept sketching and ideation
  • Project CAD design work
  • Material selections and finishes
  • Designing user experience, mechanics, actuation and lighting 
  • Quality control for outgoing art pieces
  • Prototyping ideas in our workshop
  • Design for manufacturing and vendor communications
  • Design for audible noise mitigation and low power usage
  • Designing for part longevity and ease of repair/maintenance
  • Creation of documentation, drawings, and instructions
  • Travel to installs when necessary

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in design, engineering or similar related field
  • 6+ years of professional experience in creating digital products
  • Expert level CAD and parametric modeling experience
  • Obsessed with details and pushing the limits on what can be achieved
  • Prototyping using 3D printers, Laser, machine shop tools (lathe, mill, spray both etc)
  • Highly technical, lots of experience working in cross functional small teams 
  • An insatiable desire to understand, use, and even create technology and art
  • A creative and entrepreneurial mindset — always looking for ways to improve themselves
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with sensors, actuators, LEDs, motors
